New edition of photography book showcases changes at North Central

North Central College has published a new, expanded edition of “North Central College: A College in its Community,” featuring additional photographs of campus by photographer Chuck Savage.

The new edition is for sale during North Central’s sesquicentennial that marks the 150th anniversary of the first day of classes on Nov. 11, 1861.

Savage’s book and other books about the college or written by notable faculty may be purchased at the Bookstore, 100 E. Jefferson Ave. Savage’s book originally was published in 2003 and featured 96 pages of photographs of North Central’s Naperville campus compiled over 12 years. The new edition features the original 96 pages as well as an additional 36 pages of photographs.

“I’ve been in a unique position to witness how the campus has evolved over the past 20 years,” Savage said. “But even with buildings that have been there, you always see them with a different combination of light, color, shadow and foliage to create something new visually.”

In an introduction to the new section of photos, Jim Godo, assistant vice president for marketing and communications, shares a 20-year history of working with Savage to build a photo library and document a thriving, vibrant campus.

“The growth of North Central and its community is dramatic,” he writes. “Yet as Chuck’s extraordinary photographs document so well, the character of the college endures. It is that character which this book celebrates at our sesquicentennial.”

“A College in its Community” is available for $39.95 hardcover, $29.95 softcover.
