S. Elgin police to educate about heroin epidemic

The South Elgin Police Department, in cooperation with Elgin Area School District U-46, South Elgin High School, Bartlett Police Department, Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Kane County Coroner’s Office, will host an informative meeting on the “Epidemic of Heroin Addiction” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the South Elgin High School auditorium, 760 E. Main St.

This important free event is also extended to parents and students who attend South Elgin High School and Kenyon Woods Middle School, as well as any concerned citizen with regard to this recent epidemic of our society.

The South Elgin Police and the law enforcement community understand that the first step in preventing heroin use by young people is to educate everyone about how significant a problem heroin is in the society.

This presentation is designed to discuss the prevalence of the drug, its addictiveness and effects, how to detect heroin use, and how to deal with this epidemic plaguing every community.

South Elgin Police Chief Chris Merritt will host the evening’s presentation. Guest speakers will be Bartlett Police Chief of Police Kent Williams and Kane County Coroner Rob Russell.

The police chiefs and coroner, along with Lt. Kevin Williams of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and members of the South Elgin Police Department, will then answer questions at the end of the presentation. Also included will be testimony from a recovering heroin addict.
