Brown, Alvarez file for reelection in Cook County
More than 60 people stood in line — some as many as three hours — waiting for the Cook County Clerk's office doors to open at 9 a.m. Monday so they could declare their candidacy in the 2012 primary election.
State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, both Democrats, filed their re-election bids, but as of the end of the day neither faced competition from either party. The filing period continues until 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5.
Alvarez is seeking a second term while Brown, who is expected to face a challenge from Chicago 22nd Ward Alderman Ricardo Munoz, is going for her fourth term.
A two-way battle is brewing for the Cook County Board of Review, where Republican first-time Commissioner Dan Patlak of Wheeling faces a primary challenge from Sean Morrison of Palos Park. Casey Thomas Griffin of Midlothian is the lone Democrat to file thus far.
The Board of Review is three-person panel that hears property tax assessment appeals.
Karen Yarbrough, a Maywood Democrat and state representative since 2001, filed to run for Recorder of Deeds. Eugene “Gene” Moore, a Democrat who has held the post since filling in for Jesse White in 1999, has announced he won't seek re-election.
Five candidates, all Democrats and none from the Northwest suburbs, are seeking one of three board seats up for election at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Incumbent Debra Shore of Chicago faces a challenge from newcomers Stella Black, Kari Steele and Patrick Daley Thompson of Chicago, as well as Patricia Young of LaGrange Park. Thompson is the grandson of the late Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.
The nine-person board has oversight of stormwater management, flood prevention, Lake Michigan water supply, collection of wastewater and discharge of treated water.
If more than one Cook County candidate files simultaneously for the same office, their names will be entered into a lottery to determine ballot order. It will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the clerk's office.
Objections to a candidate's nominating petitions can be filed until 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12.
In Lake County's 19th District, which covers parts of Barrington, Deer Park and Kildeer, Republican incumbent Craig Taylor of Lake Zurich filed to run for a second term on the county board. In the 17th District, which covers Lake Barrington and Tower Lakes, newcomers Nick Sauer of Fox River Grove and Dan Quick of Wauconda submitted their paperwork.
As expected, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin filed his nominating petitions.
Candidates for DuPage County Board District 6, which covers parts of Bartlett, Hanover Park and Schaumburg, are incumbent Republicans Jim Zay of Carol Stream and Robert Larsen of Warrenville and incumbent Democrat Dirk Enger of Winfield. Republican Tom Sutton of Wayne also submitted his paperwork.
In McHenry County's District 1, which includes Algonquin Township, incumbent Republicans Robert “Bob” Bless of Fox River Grove and Anna May Miller of Cary filed, as did challenger Yvonne Barnes of Cary. Barnes, also a Republican, is a former county board member.
List of election filings in the Northwest suburbs
Filing for the March 20, 2012 Illinois primary election opened Monday for county, state legislative and judicial candidates.
Here is a comprehensive list of the first-day filers for county and state legislative offices of interest to the Northwest suburbs. Filing closes at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5.
