Black History Family Festival at Gail Borden library
“African-American Visual and Performing Arts: A Unifying Experience” will be presented from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
The event is free and open to the public. No tickets or registration. Everyone is invited to experience dancing, storytelling and art as the sixth annual Black History Family Festival continues its efforts to empower, strengthen and unite.
There will be many highlights. Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago, the largest African dance company in the U.S., will be performing in the library’s community rooms at 4:15 p.m. Other special guests include artist/educator Milt Evans Jr., who will guide participants in making a mask, storyteller Linda Gorham, and local artists whose work will be for sale.
Elgin Area School District U-46 student art will be on display, and representatives from local community and social service organizations will provide information about their group. You will be invited to learn about future leaders — outstanding local African-American high school students. High school students will also be encouraged to visit the library’s new teen center, Studio 270. The Black History Family Festival promises a program that will teach, inspire and engage everyone.
