'War Horse' headed for Chicago stage

The National Theatre of Britain's massive stage hit production of "War Horse" is coming to Chicago as part of a North American tour for a three-week run at the Cadillac Palace Theatre starting Tuesday, Dec. 18, to Saturday, Jan. 5.

Michael Morpurgo's 1980s novel about a horse's perspective of World War I was adapted for the stage in 2007 by playwright Nick Stafford in a critically acclaimed staging by directors Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris in collaboration with South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company.

The two-time limited engagement of "War Horse" at The National Theatre of Great Britain later transferred to a commercial run in London's West End in 2009 (where it is still running) and then hit Broadway in 2011 when it won five Tony Awards including Best Play. Hollywood director Steven Spielberg saw "War Horse" in London, which helped inspire him to make his film of the same name. It is currently nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture.
