Fox Valley Park District holds 3rd annual Bug Fest
Insects and the fascinating world of bugs take center stage at the third annual Bug Fest from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Lippold Park and Red Oak Nature Center, 2343 S. River Road, Batavia.
The free family-friendly event features fun and educational activities with a swarm of bug-related games, demonstrations and crafts. In addition to Lippold Park and Red Oak, the event uses the one-half mile stretch of the Fox River Trail that connects the two facilities.
Visitors can park and begin their exploration at either Lippold or Schneider Elementary School, 304 Banbury Road, North Aurora. Free shuttle buses run regularly between Red Oak and Schneider. Both Red Oak or Lippold have free guide books available, along with T-shirts, books and snacks for sale.
Children and adults alike learn about the benefits of bugs and the roles they play, such as pollinating plants and flowers, aerating the soil and serving as a major source in the food chain.
“Bugs hold a bit of intrigue for everybody, and they’re often misunderstood,” said Red Oak naturalist and facility supervisor Margaret Gazdacka. “They’re actually pretty amazing creatures that play a huge role in nature.”
Red Oak features hourly presentations by David Stokes, an award-winning naturalist whose humorous and educational lessons are a hit with audiences of all ages.
Also at Red Oak, local beekeeper Harry Patterson discusses how bees make honey and explain their important role in nature with several scheduled presentations. Various varieties of honey are available for sale.
Red Oak also hosts a “predator pavilion,” where the Raptor Center will present various bugs and activities.
At Lippold, Terminix has an extensive bug exhibit with a host of displays and insect collections, including cool bug artifacts.
