Scouting Marian Central at Montini
No. 10 Marian Central (8-3) at No. 6 Montini (9-2)
Class 5A quarterfinal
Game time: 1 p.m. Saturday
Last week: Marian Central 40, Grayslake Central 7; Montini 28, Sycamore 7
Outlook: The Suburban Christian Conference titans meet in the playoffs for the seventh time. Montini won this year's regular-season game 35-6, but in 2007 and 2009 the loser in the regular season won the playoff matchup. Marian, 47-15 all-time in the playoffs (Montini is 36-20), can deliver a 1-2 punch with tailback Corey Cavitt's 1,114 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing and 6-foot-7 quarterback Ben Krol's 1,731 yards, 13 touchdowns passing. Marian-Montini means physicality and technique, like Montini interior offensive linemen Brian Piper, Mac Robinson and Zach Taylor blocking big Hurricanes defensive tackles Brian Rowe and Ryan McKee. More two-platoon than Ed Brucker's squad, Montini must diagnose where and how far its spread offense can dent pass coverages receiver Jordan Westerkamp on the deep sideline, Anthony Taylor between the hash marks, Joey Borsellino on the short flank. "We're going to have to be patient," Broncos coach Chris Andriano said.
Advancement: Winner plays the winner between Kaneland (11-0) and Vernon Hills (10-1).
