Invent chip to stop cell use in cars

I was encouraged by the front-page article in the Dec. 14 edition of the Daily Herald regarding proposed bans on all forms of cellphone use while driving. I am tired of reading about how the message isn’t getting out about texting.

Assuming that most people can read or watch a news report, let’s stop avoiding the real problem — denying the truth, which is: people don’t want to change, period. We don’t want more government, but here is an example of our inability to self-govern.

Even in the worst recession to date, we camp out in front of stores overnight to buy the newest iPhone and do it again every six to eight months in any kind of weather. Rather than a ban, technology ever changing lightning fast, why not invent a chip in new cars that incapacitates cellphones from working, with the exception of 911 calls, while the vehicle is running? Create a law that requires existing vehicles to have the chips installed.

Just think, the life saved may be your own or someone in your family that you love. In the meantime, drive selfless.
