Grayslake Central collects food for local pantry

Students from Grayslake Central High School’s Student Council and Public Service Practicum classes collected more than 40,000 pounds of food — the weight of more than 20 cars — for the 21st annual drive to help a local pantry.

In addition to providing food for the Avon Township Food Pantry, the food collected will provide holiday meals to more than 75 local families. Meals will include a frozen turkey, potatoes, apples, milk and several boxes of nonperishable goods.

It was a culmination of many weeks of work by the students and the efforts of numerous community groups. The process began Nov. 16 when students delivered bags to every house in the community. Students then picked up the bags Nov. 23.

As part of the process, the students have been coordinating an in-school food drive since Nov. 25. The success of this year’s food drive would not be possible without the generosity of the Grayslake Exchange Club and Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church.

Public Service Practicum teacher Dustin Chierico has high praise for the Grayslake students.

“Our students take a tremendous amount of pride in knowing that they are a part of the biggest student-organized food drive in Lake County and that their efforts help so many people in their community”

More than 120 students were expected to participate in organizing and boxing the food Dec. 6 at Grayslake Central.
