Videocam leads to burglary charges in Elk Grove

It was a case of reality TV nabbing two unsuspecting suspects.

When a manager at Janaki Food, 939 Lee St., Elk Grove Village, noticed an estimated $10,000 in goods had mysteriously vanished, he installed security cameras to see what was happening, authorities said.

According to police reports, the cameras caught two men burglarizing the store on Jan. 27 and Jan. 29, respectively taking an estimated $1,034 and $1,955 in goods.

After store employees reportedly identified the men in the video, Elk Grove Village police Friday arrested Ricardo Torres, 22, of Chicago, and charged him with burglary.

Torres was held on a $50,000 bond Saturday in Cook County court. He's expected back in court April 11.

The other man identified in the video was given a $60,000 bond in absentia because he is currently being held at the Dodge County Jail in Wisconsin on burglary charges.
