FBI raid on Calabrese home turns up $725,000 in cash, guns, jewelry
The FBI searched the Oak Brook home of convicted Chicago "Outfit" head Frank Calabrese Sr. Tuesday and turned up guns, money, documents and tape recordings hidden in secret compartments, authorities said.
According to an affidavit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court, agents found a secret compartment behind a family portrait on a basement wall and within it seven guns wrapped in clothing or towels, about 1,000 pieces of jewelry, manila envelopes containing more than $725,000, audiotapes and recording devices and various handwritten notes and ledgers.
The search also turned up $26,000 in his wife's locked bedroom drawer and various deeds and other paperwork.
Calabrese was found guilty of racketeering and other charges in 2007 including being found responsible for several mob murders. He was sentenced to life in prison by Judge James Zagel, who also issued an order holding Calabrese liable for $27.7 million in unlawfully acquired proceeds and restitution to murder victims. The judge authorized a levy earlier this month leading to the search warrant.
