Baseball / Lake County roundup
Grayslake Central 12, Lakes 3: Grayslake Central had a big day at the plate.
Not only did the Rams belt 13 hits in their victory, they also got 6 of them to go for extra bases.
Ryan Hamrick led the way with 4 hits, including a triple and a double. Derek Idstein had a triple and a double and Austin Leggett and Austin Miller also had triples. Leggett drove in a total of 4 runs.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever been a part of a team that had 4 triples in one game,” Grayslake Central coach Troy Whalen said. “We had a good day at the plate and we scored half of our runs after two outs and those runs are always back-breakers.”
On the mound, Mark Gawinski picked up his second win of the season, striking out 7 batters over five innings.
“Mark was terrific and did a great job of spotting his pitches against a very good hitting team,” said Whalen, whose team moves to 6-3 on the season.
For Lakes, Jake Brown had 2 hits, including a double.
Grant 11, Zion-Benton 6: Grant pounded out 11 hits on its way to victory. The Bulldogs, who improve to 4-9, got a 3-for-4 performance at the plate from John Schenning. Schenning blasted a double and also drove in 3 runs. Meanwhile, Tyler Gorski smacked a home run for Grant while Jake Ring finished with 2 hits and 3 stolen bases.
