It pays to live in Rosemont

It pays to live in Rosemont.

The village once again is giving residents money back in the form of homeowner grants. Homeowners may apply for property grants up to $3,060 in 2011.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 20.

It’s the 16th year in a row Rosemont has offered the grants. The amount per household has increased each year.

“In Rosemont, the taxpayers are the boss,” said Mayor Brad Stephens in a news release. “Anytime we can return their money back to them, we should, and I am pleased we are doing it again this year. Our residents help make this town such a success and wonderful place to live.”

In 2010, homeowners received more than $1 million through the program, and the village has given out about $11 million over 16 years.

Grants are calculated using the first $72,500 of equalized assessed value of a home excluding exemptions, or the actual equalized value minus exemptions, whichever is less.

The maximum grant this year is $3,060, up from $2,992 last year and $2,909 in 2009. The total grant is based on the amount paid in property taxes to the village and Rosemont Elementary District 78.

The grant money is meant to help homeowners with repairs and maintenance, but is not restricted. Residents pay income tax on the money and have to prove the residence is owner-occupied to qualify.

Applications are at Rosemont village hall, 9501 W. Devon Ave., and park district offices, 6140 N. Scott St.

Checks are paid to homeowners within 30 days of applying.
