Bitler named Round Lake Beach police chief
Gary Bitler, who has risen through the ranks in a 30-year career, has been named police chief in Round Lake Beach.
Mayor Richard Hill on Thursday announced the appointment of Bitler, who has served as interim chief since last September, with the departure of Doug Larsson.
In a statement, Hill said he and the village board recognized Bitler's dedication and commitment during his tenure.
Appointed as a police officer in 1979, Bitler became a detective in 1986, a sergeant in 1993, lieutenant in 1999 and deputy chief in 2003. He is the highest decorated officer in the department's history, which dates to the late 1940s. The department has 45 full-time officers.
In a message to residents when he was appointed interim chief, Bitler said the department was committed to ongoing partnerships with the community, such as the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program that assists landlords. He said the department was particularly proud of the volunteer Mobile Eye groups.
Bitler will be sworn in at 7 p.m. Monday during the village board meeting at the village hall, 1937 N. Municipal Way.
