Sound, not silence this time at Elgin library
Patrons entering the Gail Borden Public Library Tuesday night were probably expecting a little more quiet.
Instead, they were treated to classical string music echoing throughout the entryway. Musician Sara Vettraino of The Roy Vombrack Orchestra based in Carol Stream played tunes made famous by their association with television, motion picture and literary works during a half-hour performance titled "Theme Songs from Books and Films." The performance was in honor of National Library Week.
Patrons of all ages stopped to listen to melodies from movies such as "Gone With the Wind," "Star Wars" and even "Harry Potter." Children stared in wonder watching Vettraino play. She even played "Old MacDonald" and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" for them as well as a hoe down song for them to dance to. Vettraino has been playing the violin for over 40 years and has been with The Roy Vombrack Orchestra since 1993.
Kristina Smith of Elgin brought her daughter, Angela, 10, to listen for the whole 30 minutes. Angela started playing the violin this year and Kristina wanted her to see a professional perform. "It was a nice opportunity to see that," said Kristina. Angela even got to hear the Star Wars theme she had hoped would be played.
An event is planned every day this week at the Gail Borden Library. Go to www.gailborden.info for details.
