Elgin church damaged by lightning
No one was injured when lightning struck the steeple of an Elgin church early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The Elgin Fire Department responded to the call at about 3 a.m. at Vineyard Christian Church, 220 Division St., Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said in a news release.
The lightning strike broke a hole in the top of the steeple, and there was water damage in the steeple tower and the stairwell. Altogether, the damage was estimated at more than $35,000.
Fire departments from West Dundee, Pingree Grove and Hoffman Estates also assisted.
