Maple Park couple charged with child endangerment

A Maple Park couple has been charged with misdemeanor endangering the life or health of their children, according to police.

Geneva police say they received a call saying there were children selling items door-to-door around 5:30 p.m. Jan. 1 in the 2800 block of Cornwall Lane.

They determined the two had been "intentionally" left "in an unfamiliar neighborhood during inclement weather, with ambient air temperature being 9 degrees and the wind chill 3 below zero, with no shelter or means of contacting the defendant(s) for help for a period of 15 minutes" or more, according to the criminal complaint filed.

Police did not release the exact ages, or the sex, of the children, or what they were selling.

Johnathan P. Meegan, 37, and Karen K. Meegan, 36, both of the 40W0-100 block of Route 38, are due to appear in court Jan. 19 on the charges.

They were also given Geneva city ordinance tickets for soliciting without a permit.

Police also reported the matter to the Department of Children and Family Services.
