Naperville cops find cache of knockoffs in DUI arrest

A Yorkville woman’s arrest on drunken driving charges led Naperville police to a cache of counterfeit designer handbags, sunglasses and scarves she planned to sell for a profit, authorities said Wednesday.

Kimberly Frachey, 52, of the 1500 block of Coral Drive, was indicted by the DuPage County grand jury Tuesday on a felony charge of possession of counterfeit items with intent to sell.

Authorities said Frachey was arrested on a DUI charge after her BMW X5 was involved in a minor traffic crash Jan. 3 in Naperville. Afterward, police located dozens of imitation Louis Vuitton, Coach, Burberry and Chanel handbags, scarves, sunglasses and other accessories in the rear of her sport utility vehicle, Naperville police Sgt. Gregg Bell said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Fisher said the items had a retail value of at least $1,000, possibly more. He said Frachey told police she bought the merchandise in Chicago and planned to sell it to individuals and boutiques around the area.

Frachey could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted of the felony charge, which also is punishable by probation. In addition, she faces a mandatory minimum fine equal to one quarter of the retail value of the items, Fisher said.

Frachey, who is free on $10,000 bail, is set for arraignment April 26. Defense attorney Scott Brower said he was still reviewing the case and had no immediate comment.

“We’re conducting our own investigation into these allegations,” he said.
