Longtime Wheeling public works employee honored

Wheeling is honoring a veteran municipal employee who'll soon be retiring.

At this week's village board meeting, officials revealed that July 6 will be Luis Magana Day.

Magana, a maintenance operator in the public works department's utility division, is retiring that day after 38 years of public service. He's a longtime Wheeling resident, too.

Village Clerk Kathy Brady read a proclamation celebrating Magana's career. It praised Magana for his professional knowledge, his friendly demeanor and his optimistic outlook.

"He is an invaluable employee, colleague and friend," the document reads. "We are most grateful for the many contributions Luis has made during his 38 years in public service and extend our best wishes for many years of good health and happiness during his retirement and future endeavors."

After the proclamation was read, Village President Pat Horcher gave Magana a plaque and revealed an honorary street sign that will be displayed and then given to the retiree.

"I want to thank you for your dedication to the village," Horcher said. "When we lose somebody like you, it will be greatly felt in the department."

Magana was joined at Monday's meeting by family and friends. He joked that he's "still got a few days" and can change his mind about retiring.
