New title character for Lyric Opera's 'Carmen'

American mezzo-soprano Kate Aldrich has withdrawn from the Lyric Opera of Chicago's October revival of Bizet's “Carmen due to pregnancy-related health concerns. The fiery title gypsy Carmen was to have been Aldrich's Lyric debut.

The production opens Wednesday, Oct. 13.

“We're sorry that Ms. Aldrich is unable to continue with us at this time, said Lyric General Director William Mason. “We wish her all the best with her pregnancy and look forward to welcoming her to Lyric in the future.

Replacing Aldrich is mezzo-soprano Katharine Goeldner, who was originally scheduled to perform “Carmen at the performance of Friday, Oct. 29. An Iowa native, Goeldner has previously performed “Carmen at New York City Opera, Madison Opera and Dorset Opera in the United Kingdom.

For the Lyric, Goeldner previously played Suzuki in “Madama Butterfly and is cast as Pitti-Sing in this season's new production of “The Mikado. Visit LyricOpera.org for more information.
