Sponsor a flag for West Aurora High’s Healing Field
Submitted by West Aurora District 129
A volunteer meeting is set for Wednesday, Oct. 2, for those interested in helping create a Healing Field of more than 2,000 American flags at West Aurora High School from Nov. 3-13.
Sponsored by Old Second National Bank and the A+ Foundation for West Aurora, the Healing Field will be dedicated to all military veterans. Individuals will be able to walk among the flags with family and friends and experience the Spirit of America as they never have before.
“This Healing Field is dedicated to the veterans who gave their lives for our great country, to the families of those veterans for having made the supreme sacrifice, and to all veterans for serving with honor during peace and war,” said Rudy Keller, former West High co-principal, who is spearheading this event.
The volunteer meeting will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the West High auditorium, 1201 W. New York St., Aurora.
Volunteer activities will include assembling American flags Nov. 2 at West High; installing the flags at the Healing Field Nov. 3; and volunteer in three-hour increments at the Healing Field Nov. 3-13.
Email healingfield@sd129.org to seek additional information about the volunteer effort. Keller is hoping to find a sponsor for each of the flags. Sponsors will get to keep the flags at the end of the event. Individuals can sponsor a 3-by-5-foot Healing Field flag for a donation of $30.
In addition, an honoring tag is available for an additional donation of $5. Those who obtain an honoring tag in memory of someone who has served in the armed forces will be able to place the tags on their own flags between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 6.
After the event, a flag can be mailed to an address for an additional donation of $10. There also are small business and corporate packages available.
