13-year-old bicyclist fatally struck in northwestern Indiana

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — Police in northwestern Indiana say a 13-year-old boy was struck and fatally injured when he rode his bicycle from an ice cream shop into traffic.

Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda says Joshua Spencer of Hammond was riding near the drive-through of the Dairy Belle ice cream shop before heading into the street. He says the driver told officers she spotted Joshua but wasn’t able to stop in time to avoid hitting him.

The Times of Munster reports he died Sunday night at a Chicago hospital, about 10 hours after he was injured.
