Arbitrator: Chicago police deserve overtime

An arbitrator has ruled that the city of Chicago must pay a total of $1 million in overtime to 3,100 police officers who worked during last year’s NATO summit.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that independent arbitrator Steven Bierig agreed this week with the Fraternal Order of Police The police union had contended the officers deserved time-and-a-half overtime because they worked six or seven days straight. The union had filed a grievance saying the city was refusing to pay the overtime.

The department won widespread praise for the way its officers handled the summit.
