No charges yet in stabbing at Inverness park

Inverness police don’t expect charges to be filed against a 16-year-old Fremd High School student accused of stabbing his schoolmate until at least next week.

Police Chief Bob Haas said that besides having a difficult time getting the 18-year-old victim in for an interview, it’s been a time-consuming investigation for officers, who’ve been working to track down and talk to dozens of teenage witnesses who “scattered” as police arrived at the scene.

Police believe between 50 and 60 people showed up at South Park, located just east of Ela Road, about 4 p.m. May 26 to watch a scheduled fight between two teens. The fight had been moved to the park after initially being planned at another site in Hoffman Estates.

While everyone was congregated, another altercation broke out and the 16-year-old stabbed the victim in the side with a pocketknife, police said.

Neither teen resides in Inverness. and police are not commenting on what led to the initial fight.

The stabbing victim had surgery at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and was released the following day.

Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 spokesman Tom Petersen said school officials are working with police in the investigation, but it’s still undetermined whether anyone faces punishment from the school.

“This is really a police issue because it didn’t happen at school,” Petersen said. “If there’s what we would term ‘carry over,’ or things that took place at school as part of the events, then there could be (punishment).”

However, Petersen said the district wouldn’t disclose any future punitive action due to the student privacy act.
