Keeping busy helps Lombard man live to 105

John Kaiser, who turned 105 Thursday in Lombard, credits his long life to keeping busy.

Born in Chicago on Sept. 16, 1905, Kaiser had a twin brother, James, and seven sisters.

Kaiser grew up in Cicero and designed lighting fixtures for theaters in Chicago before the Great Depression. He also worked as an industrial engineer and received patents for some of his lighting and furniture designs.

John Kaiser is the last survivor of his siblings. He also survives his wife of 58 years, Vlasta Netopil Kaiser, whom he married in 1930. Kaiser has one daughter, Valerie Kaiser Spale, and one grandson, Keith Spale.

"I'm happy to be alive," Kaiser said as he and family members celebrated his birthday the Lexington Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
