Police, sheriffs to increase enforcement of distracted driving laws in April

In honor of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the DuPage County sheriff's office, the Illinois State Police, Carpentersville police and about 200 other police departments are increasing enforcement of laws against holding a phone while driving.

Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and traffic safety enforcement zones throughout April.

"Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes on our roads today," DuPage Sheriff James Mendrick said in a news release. "Remember, if you have a phone in one hand, you can expect a ticket in the other."

The distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
