Waste Management rolls out household hazardous waste service to Lake Villa Twp. residents
Waste Management and Lake Villa Township announced the launch of At Your Door Special CollectionSM, a convenient, door-to-door service to help Township residents safely dispose of household hazardous waste.
An enhancement of the Township's regular recycling and garbage collection service, Waste Management's At Your DoorSM service provides a safe and easy alternative for removing household waste materials, such as pesticides, chemicals, batteries, fluorescent lamps, automotive waste products (including motor oil), paints and thinners that are potentially hazardous to people, pets and the environment. The program allows residents to schedule an appointment to have the materials safely collected from their home by At Your Door Special CollectionSM staff.
“This new service will provide a new convenient and economical way for our residents to dispose of electronics and hazardous waste,” said Lake Villa Township Supervisor Dan Venturi.
“Residents will find that, with this new program, they can easily dispose of their household hazardous waste, and can trust that the material is handled safely, efficiently, and that a majority of the materials can actually be recycled,” adds Mike Brink, Waste Management's Municipal Marketing Manager for the Township. “The response to this service in other communities has been tremendous.”
Communities with At Your Door Special Collection service tend to see more active participation in the disposal of these materials when compared with permanent centers and one-day events, Brink noted.
Lake Villa Township residents can schedule a collection of their household generated hazardous waste by following these easy steps:
1. Call (800) 449-7587 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., OR submit a service request at www.wmatyourdoor.com to schedule a pickup. It is not necessary for residents to be at home at the time of collection.
2. Residents will be mailed a collection kit for the waste, including a sealable bag, labels, and simple instructions.
3. Residents collect their household hazardous waste, place it in the bag, secure the zip tie, and place it at their front door or in front of the garage for collection
(Note: DO NOT place the bag at the curb or in/near refuse carts).
4. On the established collection date, an At Your DoorSM service technician will arrive, remove the bag, and safely contain its contents in a collection truck.
Materials that should be placed inside the collection kit include garden chemicals, solvents, oil and latex-based paint, aerosols, cleaners, antifreeze, thermometers, batteries, sharps, metal polish, pool chemicals, adhesives, used motor oil and poison.
Materials that may be placed outside the kit include up to four auto batteries, up to 10 fluorescent light bulbs, a single television, one computer system (to include CPU, monitor, printer, keyboard and mouse) and up to 20 pounds of additional “consumer electronic” items with circuit boards.
Prohibited items include ammunition, medicine, explosives, asbestos, or any materials in unlabeled or leaking containers. This list is not all inclusive. Residents with questions about proper disposal methods for non-acceptable items, commercial chemicals or hazardous materials in containers larger than five gallons in size, please call the Call Center (800) 449-7587.
