Crosby, Sakas, Dominiak in Antioch, where voters reject former mayor, trustee
Antioch voters elected two incumbent village trustees and one newcomer Tuesday, deciding against a former mayor and a former trustee.
With all 14 precincts reporting late Tuesday, unofficial results showed voters elected incumbents Dennis Crosby and George Sakas, and newcomer Mary Dominiak.
The three beat out former Trustee Barbara Porch and former Mayor Taso Maravelas for three, 4-year seats.
“It’s very gratifying,” said Crosby. “This board has really come together over the past few years.”
“I’m thrilled,“ added Dominiak. “I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the board and making some great things happen in Antioch.”
Maravelas said he is not disappointed by the results. “Majority rules. Democracy is working.”
Crosby, a businessman who has served on the board since 2007, garnered 667 votes. Sakas, a city planner who has been a trustee since 2009, received 653 votes, and Dominiak, an assistant professor, collected 658 votes.
Porch, the executive director of the Antioch Chamber of Commerce who served as trustee from 1999 through 2007, received 411 votes. Maravelas, who served as trustee from 1995 through 1999 and mayor from 2001 through 2005, took in 338 votes.
He said he ran because he thought he could help. “I know that our village is in big trouble financially. ... The people of Antioch decided to elect the same people, so God love them.”
Maravelas said he has no regrets about running. “Life goes on,” he said.
All vote totals are unofficial and will not become official until the vote is canvassed later this month.
In the next four years, Antioch trustees will have to deal with budget shortfalls in the face of declining revenues.
