‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’ comes to St. James Parish

Do you remember the classic tale of Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher, Huck Finn, Aunt Polly, Injun Joe and a certain whitewashed picket fence? Now add colorful period costumes, stunning set design and a Broadway score and you have the outstanding 44th St. James Community Theatre musical, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” adapted for Broadway by Ken Ludwig with songs and music by Don Schlitz.

It is the tale of Tom and Huck finding adventure and danger at the hands of the evil Injun Joe, but also a tale of their friendship and of young love as Tom befriends the new girl in town, Becky Thatcher. Tom’s obnoxious younger brother Sid makes life with his Aunt Polly a challenge, but Tom’s natural charm and good heart eventually wins the whole town over by play’s end. Songs include “In the Bible,” “Murrell’s Gold,” “Ain’t Life Fine” and “To Hear You Say My Name.”

The show will be performed at St. James Parish Hall, 820 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights, on selected evenings at 7:30 p.m., starting July 12 and also for two Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

Evening shows are July 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27. Sunday matinees are July 14 and July 21. There is a dinner show at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19, which includes an extra $12 per person fee.

Ticket prices range from $10 to $17 and may be purchased online at the St. James Community Theatre website, www.stjamestheatre.org.

This site also allows you to choose your seat in the St. James Parish Hall. There is a $2 surcharge for tickets bought at the door.

Tickets for the dinner at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19, may be purchased by calling the box office at (224) 345-7200, ext. 8514.

This production of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is directed by Kevin Wiczner, choreographed by Kara Williams and music directed by Jeff Poindexter. The far-reaching cast includes performers from McHenry and Schaumburg to Chicago. This talented cast of 63 includes Joel Bennett as Tom Sawyer, Franco Longobardi as Huck Finn, Kim O’Conner as Aunt Polly, Lauel Saflarski as Widow Douglas, Rebecca Parvin as Becky Thatcher and Case Carvell as the evil Injun Joe.
