It’s a keeper as Andre, Antioch roll to victory
A fishing derby of sorts was held in Round Lake on Friday night. However, it was not held on water.
The Antioch Sequoits did not bring their boats or fishing poles, but they reeled in multiple catches of the day in the second quarter against the host Panthers.
Sequoit quarterback Zachary Andre threw for 4 touchdowns on 5 passes in the quarter, powering Antioch to a 41-6 victory over Round Lake in their North Suburban Conference Prairie Division clash.
“It wasn’t all me at all today,” said Andre. “All of those catches were great catches. They (my receivers) made it very easy for me. I just had to throw it up to them high and to the outside and let them do the rest.”
Tyler Lazarz reeled in the first touchdown pass of the quarter from 32 yards out. Jacob Lanahan juggled his 38-yard touchdown grab but secured the grab going to the ground. Starting running backs Griffin Hill (game-high 119 yards rushing) and Alan Taylor (95 yards rushing) also showcased their hands by hauling in passes from 38 and 43 yards out respectively.
Hill and Taylor provided instant offense for Antioch (2-3, 2-1 in the North Suburban Prairie) in the first quarter. Hill took a toss on the first play from scrimmage 70 yards to the end zone. Taylor capitalized on a Round Lake interception by immediately racing 90 yards for a score on the very next play.
“They (Hill and Taylor) do a great job,” Andre said. “It is nice to give them ball and I can just walk the rest of the field and let them do what they do.”
“We made a bunch of big plays early,” said Antioch coach Brian Glashagel. “We kept the pressure on the entire first half. Great performance overall. We made turnovers on defense and converted those into points.”
Christian Norris was the standout on defense for Antioch with two interceptions, including the interception right before the Taylor touchdown run after the Panthers stopped the Sequoits on fourth down.
“That was a big change of momentum right there,” said Round Lake head coach Jordan Eder, who also graduated from Antioch in 2006. “We had a shot to tie it up and I maybe could have changed some things but we just didn’t capitalize.”
Round Lake (1-4, 0-3 in the Prairie) scored in the third quarter on a 29-yard scamper by Chris Perry (team high 76 rushing yards). Cole Steger played most of the game at quarterback, filling in for the injured John Ridley, but left after a big hit that left Steger down for several minutes.
“Steger has no concussion-like symptoms,” said Eder. “He just got his bell rung. Ridley should be back next week.”
As for Antioch, they are not counting themselves out of a state playoff berth.
“Down but not out,” said Andre. “Hopefully we will win out the rest of the division. Practice harder this week and get better.”
