Court didn’t force states to change

Contrary to what you may have read or heard and even though the Defense of Marriage Act has been declared unconstitutional, the Supreme Court did not reverse DOMA, did not require states to allow gay marriages, did not change the definition of marriage and did not declare a constitutional right to gay marriage. In fact 38 states, including Illinois, still prohibit gay marriages, and the effort to increase that number will be intensified. Likewise, even though the justices allowed the state of California to not have to defend Proposition 8 that defined marriage as a union of one man and one woman, it did not rule on the validity of Proposition 8. Therefore Proposition 8 still remains the law in California.
