Palos Hills man charged with stealing from cancer patient
The theft of a cancer patient’s donation jar has led to an outpouring of generosity — including an offer to help from the suspect.
A 45-year-old South suburban man turned himself in Thursday after tipsters pegged him as the culprit. Joseph Campione of Palos Hills faces felony theft charges.
The money in the stolen jar was meant for 27-year-old Kelly Stawicki of Alsip, who has colon cancer and is uninsured.
Crestwood police detective Michael Coutre says when Campione surrendered, he was willing to make it right. He was told to make a contribution through his attorney.
An anonymous donor has written Stawicki a check for $10,000. She’s also received $100 donations from Crestwood police and firefighters and from a security company.
