For 4th year, Naperville Lions donate to help needy seniors
The Naperville Noon Lions Club has donated $500 to the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) to be used towards the Senior Citizen Project (SCP). This is the fourth year in a row they have donated money to help impoverished seniors in DuPage and Kane county.
The Naperville Noon Lions Club, found in 1948 and led by Donna Kerney, mission is “to help those in need” and focuses on programs that help vision and hearing impairment, making them a perfect fit with HSP's mission of helping needy seniors. Seniors in SCP can be enrolled in the LensCrafter's Gift of Sight program, which helps those with poor vision to receive a free eye exam and glasses.
The purpose of SCP is to alleviate the physical and psychological effects of poverty. Through the monthly deliveries, the seniors receive groceries which provide the nutrition they need to help combat their malnourishment and crippling impoverishment. There are 121 local needy senior citizens who receive donated groceries through HSP's Senior Citizen Project. Stretched thin under the strains of poverty, these seniors are unable to afford the groceries necessary to maintain their own health. The purpose of the Senior Citizen Project is to fulfill this need, by providing nutritious foods and other necessities to these seniors. Also, every three months, the needy seniors receive a box of personal care items with their delivery including, shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, lotion, soap, and hand sanitizer. HSP does so by providing monthly deliveries of 100 lbs of groceries to each of the 121 seniors in the program which include: selections of 7 fresh fruits and 8 vegetables, 7 frozen meats, 6 bags of non-perishable foods, and 2 bags of paper products.
The Naperville Noon Lions Club meet every first through fourth Tuesday at Braconi's restaurant in Naperville at 12:15.
About The Humanitarian Service Project:
HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane Counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,636 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides monthly food deliveries of 100 pounds including fresh produce, frozen meats, non-perishables, paper products and secret pal gifts to 121 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 900 children. Feed the Kids program provides 100 low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
