This trip a winner for Maine West

Trips to Highland Park have usually tripped up Maine West's boys basketball team. This one appeared no different when the hosts scored 8 of the first 10 points Friday night.

But the Warriors proceeded to score 31 of the next 35 points and cruise home with a 45-27 Central Suburban North victory.

"I don't even remember the last time we won there," said Maine West coach Erik McNeill. "When the game started like that I thought, 'Here we go again.'

"Defensively we did a nice job of taking away what they wanted to do and we took great shots and they were falling for us."

Kevin Garcia and Tom Kukec combined for 32 points and 8-for-11 shooting from 3-point range for the Warriors (8-7, 3-2) against the Giants' zone. Garcia was 5-for-6 for 17 points and Kukec was 3-for-5 for 15 points.

Conor Hart added 9 points to knock Highland Park (9-7, 3-2) from the division lead with Glenbrook North (13-3, 4-1).

Christian Liberty 56, Alden-Hebron 44: Luke Comerouski scored 24 points as Christian Liberty (10-6, 3-2 Northeastern Athletic) won for the third time this year at Alden-Hebron. Mike Hennek scored 13 and Kyle Moriarty added 12.

Downers South 67, Leyden 57: Alex Herrera scored a game-high 26 points for Leyden (10-5, 3-3) in the West Suburban Gold loss in Franklin Park. Jerron Wilbut scored 23 points to lead Downers Grove South (11-2, 4-0).
