Prospect Heights police talk safety to Metra riders
On July 30 and 31, the Prospect Heights Police Department conducted an Officer On A Train educational operation that began at the Prospect Heights Metra Station, 55 S. Wolf Road, and continued through to Union Station.
The purpose of this educational operation is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway railroad intersections and eliminate driver actions that can have tragic consequences.
Officers were placed on the train cars to inform and answer questions that pertain to the safety at highway-rail crossings or on railroad property.
Since 1990, the Officer On A Train educational program has been instrumental in helping reduce the number of car train collisions throughout the country by informing the public on the potential dangers at rail crossings.
“Every commuter, driver and pedestrian that travels on or near railroad property has a responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and know what potential dangers exist. The Prospect Heights Police Department will look to increase commuter awareness through the Officer On A Train initiative,” said Chief Jamie Dunne.
Operation Lifesaver’s mission is to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on rail property. The Prospect Heights Police Department supports this mission and is committed to the nationwide network of law enforcement officers who work to educate people about rail safety.
