Police will trade $100 gift cards for guns

Chicago will host a gun turn-in event later this month as part of a larger effort to curb the gun violence in the city.

Those who turn in a gun will get a $100 gift card and no questions asked. The event is June 23 at nearly two dozen churches throughout the city.

The announcement of the event comes days after a spate of shootings believed to be gang-related. Police officials reported 11 deaths and 43 gun-related injuries during the Memorial Day weekend.

Officials say previous events have been successful. In 2007, police collected more than 6,700 weapons.

The city has also launched the “Don’t Kill A Dream Save A Life” advertisement campaign to be featured on Chicago area television and radio affiliates.
