Submitted by Hawthorn School District 73

Kyle Prochotsky, a sixth-grade student of Hawthorn Middle School North in Vernon Hills, earned second place in a nationwide essay contest sponsored by the Alliance for Community Trees in partnership with the Morton Arboretum.

Kyle earned the award for his essay titled “What Did the Tree See?” Kyle was surprised with the award during an all-school assembly. Kyle’s parents attended the assembly, as well as Lydia Scott of the Morton Arboretum, who presented Kyle with a check for $250 and a plaque.

Writing teacher Audrey Dzhurov said Kyle is a hard worker, an excellent student and a worthy recipient of this honor.
