Scouting Marian Central at Aurora Christian
Marian Central (1-1, 0-0) at Aurora Christian (2-0, 0-0)
Game time: 7 p.m. today
Last year: Did not play.
Last week: Benet 33, Marian Central 21; Aurora Christian 54, Chicago Academy 0.
Outlook: One can't go along outscoring opponents 112-14 forever. For better or worse - for a competitor it's better - Aurora Christian enters play in the Suburban Christian Conference Blue division, where the Eagles will be hard-pressed to hold Marian Central to 18 yards of offense or 1 first down as they did to Chicago Academy. The goals of the first two games, Eagles coach Don Beebe said, were to stay healthy and have his new players settle into the offensive and defensive packages. Quarterback Anthony Maddie is getting there. After throwing an interception on his first pass of the season he's produced 5 touchdowns against both DuSable and Chicago Academy, completing 53 percent of his passes to four potential No. 1 receivers - Brandon Mayes, Grayson Roberts, Chad Beebe and Andrew Cassara - who can't all be double-covered. As always against Marian Central, a huge factor will be meeting the physical challenge offered by the likes of 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive tackles Ryan McKee and Brian Rowe, middle linebacker Jared Koch and a tailback Beebe said may be the best in the conference, Corey Cavitt, who Beebe noted just set the Hurricanes' bench and squat records. Quarterback Ben Krol, 6-foot-7, will be able to see downfield. Don't let Marian's loss to improved Benet fool you - the Hurricanes beat North Chicago 56-12. Still, Beebe doesn't believe his offensive line of David Anderson, Dean Parr, Sam Miller, Todd Clapp and Jon Mangan will be bullied nor will the Eagles be intimidated. The key? "Who's going to play smarter and not turn the ball over is probably who's going to win," Beebe said.
Next week: Marmion (2-0) at Marian Central, Sept. 17; Aurora Christian at Walther Lutheran (1-1), Sept. 18.
