10-year sentence for drunken driver
Convicted DUI driver Michael Moreno tearfully apologized Wednesday for killing a motorcyclist in Naperville and begged forgiveness from the victim's family. “I have no one to blame but myself,” the 33-year-old Plainfield man said. DuPage County Judge George Bakalis sentenced Moreno to 10 years in prison for aggravated driving under the influence of drugs and aggravated leaving the scene of the June 2012 crash that killed 63-year-old Gerald Puglise of Lombard. A Richmond man was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm after a shooting at his home, McHenry County sheriff's officials said. No one was injured. Full story.
Look up to cops tomorrow
For the 11th year, hundreds of Illinois law enforcement officers will stake out Dunkin' Donuts rooftops to benefit Special Olympics Illinois, starting at 5 a.m. Friday. To meet their goal, police officers will have to top last year's total of $240,000. Full story.
Election plan causes political strife in Lake County
Tucked inside legislation approved by the state Senate is a plan that would take away election supervision from Lake County Clerk Willard Helander and create a five-member board to handle voting. Waukegan Sen. Terry Link supports the idea, but he's the only legislator from Lake County who does. State Rep. JoAnn Osmond, an Antioch Republican, called the measure “insulting.” Full story.
Seabrook's OT goal wins series for Hawks
Brent Seabrook sent a wrist shot past goalie Jimmy Howard's glove 3:35 into overtime to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 of their second-round playoff series on Wednesday night. “Shooting pucks around in the front yard, against the garage, breaking garage doors, it's always something you think about, scoring an overtime winner in Game 7,” Seabrook said. White Sox offense hardly a big hit
White Sox manager Robin Ventura would like nothing more than to take all of his slumping hitters and sit them on the bench. “Unless you have a 40-man roster, it's one of those where we have to find a way out of it and keep grinding and keep going,” Ventura said after Dioner Navarro and the Cubs pulverized the Sox 9-3 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon.
