Redskins’ Banks stabbed:

The agent for Washington Redskins kick returner Brandon Banks says the player was stabbed while coming to the aid of a longtime friend, who was critically injured. Agent James Gould says in a statement released Saturday afternoon that Banks suffered a surface knife wound to his side that required stitches. He says Banks is expected to be released today from a local hospital.

Haynesworth formally charged:

Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has been formally charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a road rage incident earlier this month. Fairfax County (Va.) police say the 29-year-old Haynesworth and his attorney appeared at a police station Saturday morning. Haynesworth signed a summons warrant charging him with assault and left. He’s scheduled to appear in court March 31.

Vonn hopes to defend title:

Still dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion, Lindsey Vonn will wait until just before the start of the downhill to decide whether to defend her title today at the world championships in Garmisch-Parten-Kirchen, Germany.

“If she feels OK, then she’s going to go tomorrow,” U.S. women’s coach Alex Hoedlmoser told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Clijsters, Kvitova reach final:

Kim Clijsters will face Petra Kvitova in the final of the Open Gaz de France today in Paris. Clijsters, who will be ranked No. 1 on Monday, defeated Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-1, 7-5 on her third match point. Kvitova cruised past Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 6-2, 6-0.

Lagat breaks U.S. indoor mark:

Bernard Lagat set a U.S. indoor record in the 2-mile run, breaking a 21-year-old mark to become the American record-holder at the five distances from 1,500 meters to 2 miles. Lagat finished in 8 minutes, 10.07 seconds during a college meet at the Armory on Saturday night in New York, beating the mark of 8:15.02 that Doug Padilla set on Feb. 16, 1990, in Los Angeles. The 36-year-old Lagat now holds the U.S. indoor marks in the mile and 2-mile, and at 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
