Illini center grabs Big Ten honor

For the second time this basketball season, Illini center Meyers Leonard has earned Player of the Week honors in the Big Ten.

A 7-foot-1 sophomore from Robinson, Ill., Leonard averaged 16.5 points and 14.5 rebounds in Illinois’ 64-60 win over Cornell and 78-74 loss to No. 9/8 Missouri in St. Louis last week.

Leonard also averaged 3.5 assists, 2.5 blocks and 1.0 steals while shooting 62.5 percent from the floor last week. His 16 rebounds against Cornell were a career high.

Aaron White, Iowa’s 6-8 forward, earned Freshman of the Week honors as he averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds as Iowa defeated Central Arkansas (105-64) and Boise State (81-72) last week.

Illinois opens its Big Ten season at home against Minnesota on Tuesday.
