Elgin Historical Society turns 50

Submitted by Elgin Area Historical Society

At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, join the Museum board of directors in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Elgin Area Historical Society with an Artifact Garden Dedication and BikeCHAIN Project Kickoff at the museum, 360 Park St., Elgin.

Elgin historian Mike Alft will release his new book, “The History of History in Elgin,” with a short program on the development of preservation in Elgin.

Mayor Kaptain will dedicate the museum's Artifact Garden with monuments relating to the Watch Factory, Civil War and Masonic Temple.

The BikeCHAIN map will be available for a donation and Lucy Elliott, museum educator, will lead a ride along the route, which connects the three Elgin museums and a number of monuments and landmark buildings. Light refreshments will be served.

On Thursday, May 19, enjoy the International Museum Day Brown Bag Lunch with John Cooper on the “History of Elgin Academy” at noon at the museum.

Celebrate International Museum Day with Dr. John Cooper as he discusses how Elgin Academy developed and changed from 1856 to today. Bring your lunch and the museum will provide drinks and dessert.
