Losing day all around for Sox against O's
The losses kept piling up for the White Sox on Sunday.
In addition to losing to the Orioles, owners of the worst record in baseball, 4-3 at Camden Yards, the Sox lost another player with an injury and they also lost a game in the standings to the Minnesota Twins.
Gordon Beckham had to exit the game in the fifth inning with a moderate right groin strain.
The second baseman suffered the injury in the second inning when he made a nice defensive play, diving for a Josh Bell's groundball up the middle and then getting to his feet and throwing out Jake Fox at home.
He isn't likely to play Monday night, when the Sox wrap up their four-game series against Baltimore.
"I don't know," Beckham told reporters after the game. "We'll try to do a few things tomorrow and see how it feels."
Beckham stayed in the game after the injury but eventually was replaced by Brent Lillibridge.
"If I had hit a single and tried to stretch it into a double, there could have been some trouble," Beckham said. "It would have been taking a big chance. I don't think it's a big deal right now."
In Saturday's win over the Orioles, catcher A.J. Pierzynski had to leave in the seventh inning after twisting his left ankle.
Banged up or not, the Sox weren't happy about losing another game to the Orioles, who improved to 5-1 under new manager Buck Showalter.
"You're playing one of the worst teams in baseball," White Sox starter Mark Buehrle said. "We should come in here and beat these guys."
Buehrle (10-9) took the loss after allowing 4 runs on 10 hits in 7 innings. The left-hander entered the game with a 7-2 record and 2.70 ERA in his previous 10 starts.
"When you look at their lineup, it's like, how is this team that bad?" Buehrle said. "They got (Brian) Roberts back, and that makes their lineup better. And their pitching staff has done a good job of holding our guys down."
Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie (6-11) had his way with the Sox, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits in 8 innings.
White Sox catcher Ramon Castro made it close with a 2-run homer off reliever Alfredo Simon in the ninth inning.
"It's a combination of good pitching and we're not hitting right now," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Right now our bats are very silent, but they're pitching well, too. Guthrie threw the ball very, very good today."
