Copeland Manor students get chemistry lesson

What do you get when you mix baking soda with citric acid and water? A pretty cool class.

Copeland Manor fifth-grade students got a chance to learn about chemistry Thursday by mixing chemicals to create various substances during a science program called Kids in Chemistry at the Libertyville school.

Kits purchased by the school from the American Chemical Society were used in the lesson, and students got some help from parent volunteers.

The lesson, titled “What’s new with CO2,” examined how carbon dioxide reacts with various substances.

“I thought it was really cool how it bubbled over,” 10-year-old Kate Barry said after an experiment mixing baking soda with citric acid and water.
