Round Lake Beach man’s dog goes missing in break-in

When burglars broke into Keith Roberts’ Round Lake Beach home a few days ago, they took coins and power tools and turned the place upside down.

But what has him most upset is one of his dogs — a white Pomeranian named Gracie — is gone.

“The real thing I’m still shaken up about is that my dog is missing. I can’t figure out why they would have taken her,” Roberts said Monday.

Burglars entered his home on the 0-100 block of West Hawthorne Drive on June 9 some time between 12:30 and 9:30 p.m.

“I came home to find one of the basement windows smashed in,” Roberts said.

Upon entering the house, he discovered everything completely turned upside down.

“They had flipped the bed over, went through drawers and medicine cabinets,” Roberts said. “The house was a mess.”

A half a case of beer was taken from the refrigerator, as well as a couple hundred dollars in coins, and power tools.

Police investigated the house for three hours. Roberts’ other dog, a black Pomeranian named Cody, was still in the house, as were three cats.

“Since the other animals were still in the house and the door was open, it’s not clear whether Gracie got out or was actually taken,” Deputy Chief Richard Chiarello said.

Roberts thinks otherwise. He also believes at least some of his three cats were harmed in some way.

“Two of my cats are acting differently and Cody knows Gracie’s missing,” Roberts said.

Describing Gracie as shy and sweet and Cody as more aggressive, Roberts believes Cody was barking and tried to protect Gracie during the intrusion.

“I think they had thrown things at him,” Roberts said.

Gracie, who he purchased from a breeder 9 years ago, is white with missing hair on her back and sides. Another factor of identification is the microchip number she wears: 053 550 800.

“She’s a sweet little dog that everyone falls in love with,” Roberts said.
