Friends to welcome Lyric Opera at Dundee Township Public Library

The Friends of the Library are bringing the Chicago Lyric Opera to residents of Dundee Township as they continue their ongoing opera lecture series. Chicago Lyric Opera lecturer William Nelson will present "The Marriage of Figaro" at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Dundee Township Public Library, 555 Barrington Ave. (Route 68) in East Dundee. Mozart's comedic opera will be performed by the Lyric Opera of Chicago starting Feb. 28.

Nelson's lecture will focus on the stories, performers, history, and musical selections of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's masterpiece about Figaro, the count's valet, and Susanna, the countesses' maid, who are desperate to marry. Although the count has designs on Susanna himself, wily servants outsmart their aristocratic masters in the ultimate upstairs-downstairs comedy.

The event is free, but registration is required. To register, call the library at (847) 428-3661, ext. 308 or visit the events and registration page at dundeelibrary.info.

Reading Patch Club: Kids can wear their love of reading on their sleeve (or their backpack, jeans, or jacket) as the library's Reading Patch Club resumed on Jan. 4.

The club invites children in preschool through eighth grade to read their favorite books and explore the library for new ones, which earns them patches.

Preschoolers through second graders can earn three patches in the following categories: general-humor, fantasy, and animals. They must read, or have read to them, 20 books in a category to receive a patch.

Third- through eighth-graders can earn five different patches in: general-humor, fantasy, animals, mystery, and Caudill Awards. They must read 10 books in a category to receive a patch.

The Reading Patch Club will end on Saturday, May 29. All the patches are free. Booklists and reading logs are available at the children's desk.

The library is located at 555 Barrington Ave. in East Dundee. For more information, contact the library at (847) 428-3661, ext. 310 or dundeelibrary.info.
