Now is time to end the death penalty

In response to the Dec. 29 article, “Lawmakers could take a last look at Illinois' death penalty,” I do hope that January is the time the legislature puts an end to our state's failed death-penalty system. After 10 years of study, it's clear that the death penalty isn't working for the people of Illinois. It's much more expensive than all alternatives. It risks the lives of the innocent. And it leaves victims' families waiting for years on end through reversals, high-publicity trials and the uncertainty that plagues the capital-punishment system.

All of this could, and should end, as soon as possible. Our lawmakers have no excuse for continuing to ignore our broken and expensive death penalty. Enough is enough, Illinois! We can do better than the death penalty.
