Lake Co. deputy's condition remains critical

Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Cashmore remains hospitalized in critical condition but is making some improvement, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran said Sunday.

Cashmore is in Advocate Condell Medical Center's intensive care unit, where he was listed Sunday in critical but stable condition, hospital spokeswoman Chris Vicik said.

Cashmore, 44, of Wadsworth, was off-duty when his personal car, a 2000 Chevy Lumina, slammed into the rear of a semitrailer at 2:30 a.m. Feb. 12 on Route 41 near Hanssen Road.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old Ford Heights man, was not injured.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident.

Curran said he and his department are deeply concerned about the condition of the longtime deputy, a man with an unblemished record who Curran said is "a father to a lot of these people." Cashmore is married and has a son.

"We're all rallying around him," Curran said. "This is a good guy."
