2 Lake Co. men indicted in kidnap attempt thwarted by hot coffee

Two men who police say tried to kidnap and rob a Round Lake woman with a shotgun in early December could spend up to 45 years in prison after being indicted by a Lake County grand jury.

Zachary Abear, of Round Lake, and James Green, of Antioch, both 18, were indicted Wednesday by a Lake County grand jury on charges of armed violence, aggravated use of a weapon, attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and two counts of aggravated kidnapping, Round Lake acting Police Chief Francis Foy said.

The men were looking for rent money as they waited for someone to walk outside the Coventry Glen Apartment Complex in the 1300 block of Coventry Glen Drive on Dec. 3, Foy said. They approached the unidentified victim, showed her the shotgun and led her back inside and where they began putting duct tape over her mouth.

The woman was carrying a cup of hot coffee and splashed it in the face of one of the attackers, Foy said.

"She then kicked the other one and ran," he said. "The two then fled out the apartment complex door."

Several witnesses saw the masked men flee, but did not see the kidnapping, he added.

With the help of witnesses, police from Round Lake and Antioch pegged Abear and Green as the culprits, Foy said. He provided no additional details.

During questioning, the two admitted to the abduction attempt, Foy said.

They are held in Lake County jail in lieu of $150,000 bond, Foy said. Their next court date is unknown at this time.
