Mahoney leaves Steppenwolf production

Actor John Mahoney (“Frasier”) has dropped out of Steppenwolf Theatre's forthcoming production of Edna Walsh's play “Penelope” in Chicago.

“Due to an unexpected death in his family, John is traveling back to his home of Manchester, England immediately,” said Steppenwolf artistic director Martha Lavey in a prepared statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to John during this difficult time … and we hope to announce a replacement shortly.”

Mahoney, a Steppenwolf ensemble member, was pictured on the company's subscription materials for the play, which is a modern take on the ancient Greek tale of Odysseus' faithful wife who is pursued by a number of suitors while he's away at war. The production runs from Thursday, Dec. 1, through Sunday, Feb. 5.
